Brief Description:  Grov-Air RV Builder Class

I attended a RV Builder's Class at Grov-Air (www.grov-air.com) this past weekend. Grov-Air is located just west of Indy in Danville, IN. The class was taught by Troy Grover and his family (literally) Troy's wife Angela has been a building partner on both his RV-6 and his current RV-10 project. Their daughters Tessa and Jenna also participated. All of us receive graduation certificates that were hand creted by their daughters. I doubt if there are other builder workshops that provide custom certificates.

Also in the class was Walt Meoller, a Comair Captain working on a RV-7, and Tom Mabis, a Nuclear Pharmacist at Cardinal Health who may start a RV-9 shortly.

Kim Shumaker, a local RV-7 builder, also provided some guidance during the workshop.

I found the class very beneficial, considering I had absolutely no previous experience with riveting. The two day class walked us through the various riveting techniques that we would use building our kits. The class was centered around building the standard Van's practice kit.

What I found extremely beneficial to me, since I hadn't ordered any of my tools yet, was the ability to not only get Troy's opinions on which tool was better, he usually had all the Brand X tools that he didn't recommend and the Brand Y tool that he recommended. So what basically happened is that he would share his opinion, then let you use the tools and formulate your own opinions. I'll document some of my experiences in my tool section.

I would highly recommend attending a RV Builder's Workshop. If you can get to Indy, take Troy's class. Rumor has it that he may have some new classes in the works.
