Brief Description:  Drill / Tap Mount for Wheel Pants

First task once I started in the shop was to remove all the clamps etc. holding the nav/strobe/position light pods onto the fiberglass wingtips. Although the instructions said that full cure took 7 days, at day 4 I figured it was OK to remove the clamps and just set them out of the way. Cleaned up the pods a bit; scuffed up in preparation for paint.

Next up was the task of drilling the brake backing plates, tapping the holes for AN3 hardware, and mounting the wheelpants. While not required, I figured it would be easier to jack up the plane and remove the lower axle assys to allow better control of the drill and tap. Additionally, there was a service bulletin issued by Sonex LLC requiring the replacement of the stainless steel bolts that hold the titanium landing gear legs to the motor mount, and the axles to the legs, so I figured I'd kill 2 birds with one stone.

Removed the axles; confirmed that the alignment marks transferred from the holes in the pants to the backing plates. Drilled holes, and tapped with a 10-32 tap. One hole on each wheel was a bit close to the axle tube, so I used an AN3 bolt in that hole on each side instead of the machine screw called out in the plans (could not get a screwdriver on the screw head due to interference).

Also replaced the upper gear leg AN4 bolts.
