Why a Sonex?

I had a cherry 1967 C-172 a few years ago with only 1600 TTAE. Great plane, but I felt I couldn't do anything with it. I have mechanical skills and the tools, but since I'm not an A&P I was at the mercy of my very talented (and therefore continually overbooked) A&P. So, I sold the 172 and started looking for a kit airplane. I could then incorporate the newest technology and maintain it myself.

When it came down to brass tacks, it was a tossup between a Van's RV-9 and the Sonex. I figured that with minimal instruments/avionics (about the level that could fit in a Sonex) and by choosing a used mid-time O-235, I could build an RV-9 within about $4-5K the price of a Sonex. But then, in checking Van's Airforce discussion forums, it seemed like most RV-9 builders were taking well upwards of 1500 hrs to build - and that was with a quick-build kit.

I decided upon the Sonex since a "typical" build time is somewhere in the 1200 hr vicinity. I figured that would amount to about 2.5 years at a decent clip (i.e., keeping my wife happy, occasional travels, etc.).

The plans are great, the company and user support are greater. There may not be as many Sonex' as there are RV's, but the passion is out there, my friends. If you're interested, find a local Sonex builder (they have a builder finder on the sonexaircraft.com website) and go check it out.
