Brief Description:  Connecting Rods / Flywheel

Mounted engine case on stand bolted to workbench. (done last night)

(Tonight) Separated the connecting rod halves - man alive, these things were toqued far beyond 25 lbs! I had to put them in a padded vise and really lean on them to break them free.

Once apart, I cleaned in the parts washer, then dried each piece. Examined the surfaces that will hold the bearing halves to ensure smoothness.

At this point, I stopped to think about the next several steps. The manual has you lube up the crankshaft rod journals and mount the connecting rods. Then, you fit studs into the case, followed by the cam bearings and main bearings. After the crank is installed along with the cam, you then are supposed to fit the flywheel assembly to check for a the correct number of shims to apply between the rear main bearing and the flyweel to determine the crankshaft end play.

This seems like a waste, so I'm going to write Sonex to determine if I can check the end play without the connecting rods and cam installed.

I dug out the flywheel and did a test fit of it onto the crank without being in the case. It would not fit (manual said this might occur), so I used some emery paper to smooth the pins on the rear of the crank. It then fit nicely, but still tight as per the manual.
