Brief Description:  Wing Mod / Secure ELT Ant / Fab Gear Fairings

It's been awhile since I got much done; my back has been giving me fits just about all week to the point where I didn't want to do anything. Then, the Texas Rangers have been in the playoffs (won the ALCS last night!), so I've either been at the games in person or have been watching on TV. Really great season!

Many builders "open up" the web between the two lightening holes in the root rib forward portion to allow better access when hooking up the flap control rod. I had not previously done this, so I used a cutoff wheel in my dremel and removed the material. I then fabricated gussets for each side of the hole to act as stiffeners. You can't tell from the pictures, but I bent a reinforcement angle on each one for additional stiffness. The angle is facing into the wing. Pilot drilled and riveted in place.

When I installed my ELT, I wanted it as far away from the comm antenna, yet I also wanted it somewhat shielded by the vertical stabilizer in case I ever end up inverted. That, plus the ELT supplier says to use only the provided cable - do not make up your own. The result is that the cable was just a bit short where I could not fasten it to the turtledeck. I fabricated a gusset and riveted it in place. To this I attached a cable tie, then used a second tie around the cable to grab the tie installed thru a hole in the gusset. The antenna does not move now when the cable is moved.

Lastly, I cut out .025 stock for the main landing gear fairings. These require some specific edge measurements to fit correctly when bent around the landing gear. Each one is opposite the other, so I had to make sure I knew which was which!
