Brief Description: Finish Ailerons
|
|
Since I'm letting my instrument panel paint dry for the 8th (10th?) time, I decided to do some "cleanup" work, especially since I intend to rig the wings in the next few weeks, personnel availability being the factor.
I had temporarily installed aileron & flap hinges as a way to store the control surfaces during fuselage construction. I removed all 4 control surfaces and stored the flaps in another room.
When I was building the ailerons, I did not have the skinny Arrow riveter, and there were two rivets on each aileron that I could not reach via any of my other riveters, regardless of whether they were cut down, whether I used shim pieces, etc.
So tonight I bent the rivets and used wedges to rivet at an angle, and squeezed the riveter between the two counterweight brackets. I thought rework would be required, but 4 good rivets were the result, as shown in picture 1 below.
Next, I installed the aileron counterweights in preparation for balancing. I also reviewed the plans for brushing up on the preferred method for balancing.
Rough weekend precluded any work on the plane. Went to Kansas for the KSU-Nebraska game, which was a disappointment. Then on the way home, my radiator side tank burst, requring a new radiator after being towed. Then we attended the Texas Rangers Divisional Playoff games on Saturday & Sunday, also a disappointment. At least I could work on the plane tonight!
