Brief Description:  Wingtip Wiring

Started today by making up a bracket for the right wing to position and secure the pitot/static tubes along with the strobe & nav/pos light harness. Did some test runs on hole size & placements for the bushings I had; determined hole spacing and marked out a piece of .032 scrap stock.

Positioned, drilled, deburred and riveted. Trimmed-back the vinyl conduit that served as the wiring run to allow the wires to reach the new bracket.

Next, I wired the wingtips. Each tip has an all-in-one strobe/nav/position light unit from GS-Air. I was concerned about noise from a strobe power supply, but another builder told me about the QuickStrobe from Nova Electronics. These are small enough to mount on the wingtip, thereby providing isolation and negating the need for shielded wires. The only drawback is that you need one for each wing. I had previously tested them for delays. If wired in parallel and power applied, both flash in sync.

The left wing also has a DuckWorks landing light (standard halogen).

Positioned the strobe controller and drilled holes for mounting screws. Next, I drilled a hole to secure a #6 x "blue" ring terminal to serve as common ground for the stobe & nav/pos lights. I also drilled a hole and inserted a rubber grommet to feed the wires from the vinyl tube wiring run to the backside of the wing spar tip. Added molex connectors for the power and ground to the nav/pos portion of the light (the strobes already had molex connectors compatible with the QuickStrobe power supply).

Repeated for the left wing.
