Brief Description:  Motor Mount Tribulations

This is getting frustrating.

After Sonex Tech Support's direction that the lower angle was intended to be trimmed, So, today I got out the trusty grinder and had at it.

Picture 1 below shows that the gear leg tube now clears just fine. However, certain critical measurements like the height of the mount WRT a/c centerline, along with the distrance of the front of the motor mount in relation to the firewall do not line up. I'm just less than 1/4" longer/taller than I should be.

I've been running with the assumption that the lower alumnium motor mount angles (SNX-F15-02), as angles, should have both legs present. The plans even say to trim minimal amount to fit.

Studying the plans, the side view of the fuselage shows the bottom of the gear tubes even with the bottom of the fuselage - mine are not - about 5/32" below it. Since the firewall is slanted, I believe that if the remainder of the lower angle flange is removed, that will allow the mount to slide down, thereby bringing the two critical measurements into alignment. Speaking with another Sonex builder today who went out and looked at *his* aircraft (Thanks, Bob!), he said that he had to remove the lower flange of his aluminum angle as well. Will finalize with a call to Sonex Monday.
