Brief Description:  Right Aft Fuse Subassembly Pilot Drill

For the first time in a long time, I felt I made some good progress tonight. Spent most of my off-Friday running errands and just being with my wife. Good times, beautiful day. Cleared some flower beds of leaves, mowed a bit, played with the dogs, walked the dogs, then got to work on the airplane tonight. Not a bad day.

Yesterday I had pilot-drilled the longerons to the right aft fuse. Tonight I pilot-drilled the left aft fuse. As with the right, the lower longeron is offset .025" to allow the lower skin to fit.

After pilot drilling the left, I positioned and back-drilled the rudder stop plates for both left and right side.

Then I moved on to the initial pilot drilling of the vertical channels. I marked the centerlines on the channel pieces, then realized that it would be difficult to position them from the underneath side, since they must be 1/4" from the top of the upper longeron. On the longerons, I marked the centerlines of the pre-drilled holes in the skin, then marked the back side of the channels for the desired centerline. It was then easy to position the channels, line up the marked lines, and clamp in place.

Unfortunately, I only had one pair of vise-grip clamps, so I had to postion and clamp one channel, flip over the assy, pilot drill it (wow - the blue centerlines were all lined up!), then flip it back over and move onto the next channel.

Vertical channel #1 is the odd Z-shaped channel that required special fitting. Fortunately, it lines up with the leading edge of the aft skin, so I could position it and drill without having to flip it over.

Can't rivet yet as I still need to cut the 4" inspection holes and the rudder cable slot.
