Brief Description:  Elevator to Stabilizer Mate

Time does not represent 100% of the effort spent today, as I try to record only those hours related to "touch labor"; i.e., actually fabricating or assembling something.

Some time spent trying to fabricate a wood spacer to assist in positioning the elevator hinge for drilling for mate to the horizontal stabilizer. This piece would rest inside the aft spar channel, and allow the stabilizer side of the elevator hinge to slip in between it and the underside of the stabilizer, supporting it, allowing me to drill thru the previously-drilled skin and spar.Didn't see a need to go buy a piece of lumber when I have so much just laying around the shop, but yet, didn't have the ideal piece. Tried to fit some together to result in the overall height. Had to also be narrow enough to fit within the wider space between the elevator and the stabilizer. That part went well. Then, I discovered that it would not allow the hinge to rest far enough into the spar channel, since the wood was deeper than the hinge flange.

About that time, my neighbor/CFI/RV-12 builder stopped by. He assessed the situation, and offered that he had a piece of wood that he thought would be ideal. I gave him the measurements, and he appeared about 20 minutes later with the perfect spacer block.

That done, we proceeded to drill & cleco the hinge halves to the stabilizer. Since the rudder hinge is a bit tight when inserting the hinge pin, I decided to have the stabilizer half of the hinge mounted to the elevator to ensure minimal variances in the distance of the hinge to the edge of the stabilizer. This worked well, allowing firm, yet relatively easy insertion and removal of the hinge pins.

Up-drilled to #30, disassembled, deburred, and riveted all together. As with the stabilizer skin, left the two outboard holes un-riveted to allow later fitment of the fiberglass tips.
