Brief Description:  Cover for Plans

I've read that the DAR's like to see evidence that the alleged builder actually built his/her airplane. Opinion says that they don't want to see pristine plans that look as though they've never been out of the box.

Well, my plans have seen quite a bit of use over the past year, and it always seems that I want to lay something on them. As a result, there's been a few small tears, general smudges, etc. So, I decided to make a cover for my plans.

I tried the aviation departments of Home Depot, Lowes, etc, and they didn't have what I wanted - something close to the heavyweight clear plastic covers like folks used to use to cover their furniture back in the '50's and '60's.

Finally found some at a fabric store. They had some that was .010, .012, .015, and my choice, .020. Unfortunately, they only had the .020 weight in a 54" width roll. I was really hoping to get a 72" roll, since the plans are 2' x 3', and I could use one 2' tall piece in a wrap-around fashion for the front and back. I got one yard of the 54" stuff, and cut it into two 2' x 3' pieces (kept the overlap given by the store).

In the olden days at my job, we used these threaded posts that we called "Chicago Screws" to hold our technical documents together. How they got that name, I'll never know. Anyway, I found them at Lowes, and now they're called "threaded posts with screws". The post part is about the same as an AN3 bolt (3/16"), and the screw head and bottom flange are 3/8". I drilled 4 holes in the binding edge of the plans, and cut some scrap metal to act as stress relief.

The first pic below is the top (front) of the plans. The 2nd pic is the underside. I was just too lazy to make two long strips of scrap, so made 4 smaller ones. I had enough plastic for the top sheet to wrap all the way around the binding. Once positioned, I just drilled thru the plastic and binding, and fastened using the threaded posts.
