Brief Description:  Gas Tank Prep for Installation / Tank Straps

Easy day; just tedious.

Last night I had sealed all of the fuel tank plugs, outlets, and sender with teflon pipe dope.

I had previously vacuumed-out the tank; today I filled the tank with gasoline, sloshed around, and dumped into a bucket. I could see stuff in the bottom of the white bucket. Using a filter, I then poured the gas from the bucket into a transfer container, refilled the tank, sloshed some more, and dumped back in the bucket until clear.

This took about 4-5 iterations. Lots of fumes. Anyone got a match? Finally, I could get no more stuff to come out of the tank with the gasoline, so I filled it up with about 4 gallons of gas and let it set for awhile to see if any fittings were leaking. None!

I then installed the tank straps to check the front ones. I had heard from other builders that they have had to shorten the front straps. From the kit, they are the same length as the rear straps, and since the fuselage narrows at the front, they are just too long.

I straightened the existing angle bend on the straps, drilled new holes for AN3 hardware, and re-bent the angles as shown in fig 2 below. I didn't see a need to cut off the old ends since no one will see them; I also didn't want to dull my bandsaw blade. Did another fit check and it appears they will be OK.

Lastly, I cleco'd the glareshield in place to check the gas tank fit with the upper felt spacer. I want to position an Adel clamp to secure the fuel line and don't want to position it until the tank is in it's final resting spot.
