Brief Description:  Canopy deck - F-621B

Re-fabricated the replacement F-621B canopy deck. On the first one, I had cut the tab off the fwd end of the underlying portion. Having already practiced once, this was quick to cut and shape to the side of the fuselage. Used the curved tooth file for quick removal of the excess material.

#2 shows the wrong piece on top of the right piece for comparison. Note the missing tab on the top piece, just below the "dart" of wood in the center. This tab gets four rivets and inserts under the F-621A - seen in the installed piece.

(Entry includes time for 9/30 and 10/1/06 work on this task)

Also; note that the end rivet on the Fwd top and four on the Fwd side are -4's - all others are -3's. The top side is dimpled and the longeron is countersunk. Those Fwe -4 rivets are actually 'blind rivets' and NOT AN's (but 1/8" dia.). The vertical channel prevents bucking them.

The canopy decks are the determining width of the seats for big guys like me (6' 3" - 250lbs) with wide shoulders. I cannot imagine some of my friends being in the right seat for cross-country trips in this plane. (Maybe I'll be a repeat offender and build an RV-10 next?) I'd be tempted to really consider an alternative to the canopy deck for an extra inch of width ...
