Brief Description: Installing the wing attach angle assemblies
Ok, this is where I did not follow the instructions on the plans. The plans call for the wing attach angle assemblies to be positioned on the spars with the 3/32” holes centred in the 3/16” holes on the attach blocks, then ream out the 3/32” holes in the spars to 3/16” using the blocks as a guide. I was concerned this process would never give me a perfect line-up with the 3/16” holes on the other spar once I complete it and have to mate the spars. I know the holes then still have to be reamed out again to 1/4" when mating the spars but still, it’s better to have a perfect line-up already at this point. In order to overcome this I used a process I call “pre-mating” the spars. I assembled the right spar webs as per plans (without spar caps) and clecoed them together, I then “pre-mated” the spars using some 3/32” drill bits in the mating holes to line them up and clamped everything together, this then allowed me to updrill both sets of spar webs to 1/8” and finally to 3/16”, the holes line up perfectly as you can see in the last picture with some AN3 bolts installed in the holes. I will now be able to use the 3/16” holes in the spar webs to position the wing attach angle assemblies much more precisely using a 3/16” bolt or drill bit, knowing the attach angle assemblies will line up perfectly as long as they line up perfectly with the 3/16” holes in the spar webs.
