Brief Description:  Positioning and drilling the caps on the left main

Work on the left main spar started tonight.
First of all the spar caps need to be positioned correctly on the main spar web, kit builders get 3 precision made spacers which are clecoed to the web to help them with this task, scratch builders have to be a bit creative by either making a jig, making their own spacers or making some sort of measuring tool. I decided to make my own spacers.
Sonex does not publish the width of the spacers but you can easily deduct that from the plans. I also clamped two carpenter squares together at the correct distance to make sure once I had the caps positioned using the made-up spacers that my calculations and measurements were indeed correct.
Even though the spacers were perfect and everything was in the correct place pretty much straight away, I spent about an hour measuring and re-measuring before I was confident enough to drill the first hole, I do not want to mess up my expensive spar caps.
After that I drilled and clecoed a few more holes to set everything firmly in place.
That’s enough excitement for one night.
