Brief Description:  Learned standard riveting technique

Given my problem with the larger rivets, I decided to get back to basics. The riveting gun I had borrowed from Dave Clay was a 3X gun from Aircraft Tool Supply, so I contacted them for assistance. This led to several phone and email exchanges with Desmond who was quite helpful. On his advice, I decided to do all of my rivets using the rivet gun and bucking bar. I purchased a 3 pound bar and practiced on all the remaining holes in the ruined spar. As with any skll, practice is essential and by the end I was consistently driving rivets that were quite close to nominal dimensions, and rarely approaching the minimums or maximums. Another help was several articles by Tony Bingelis on the EAA website (members area). The biggest problem I had been experiencing with the 6-14 rivets was an initial bounce/rebound, despite every effort to keep the stack pushed down. By going to the freestyle riveting and learning how to gently tease the gun until the rivet was "set" (expanded) in its hole, I overcame that problem completely. Once the rivet is set, it become integral with the larger piece, and the sound of riveting actually changes. From that point on, one can go full speed until the rivet has reached the proper dimensions.
