Brief Description: Gear Mount Fix
Well, I screwed up drilling the last hole on the left side main gear mount. In drilling the mount to the fuselage, I somehow got the drill canted and hosed it up pretty badly. I have to have the mount bushing repplaced by a local welder, and the hole through the gusset and the lower fuselage skin has a pretty bad cant to it.
After thinking on it for a couple of days, I realized the best way to fix this is pretty easy. I drilled out the rivets holding the gusset to the longerons and seat structure, and then used it as a template to make a new one. This was pretty easy, and I drilled out the holes to full size on the drill press so they match exactly. To fix the lower skin, I made a patch from 0.032" 6061-T6, the same shape as the gusset, but extended in length so that I can add a row of rivets across the front to attach to the existing skin. It had to be longer because there is not enough room under the gusset for the CCP-42 rivets. The rivets through the longeron and gusset will be replaced with CCP-46 to ensure adequate grip.
I did not rivet this patch or the gusset in; they'd stay clecoed until I get the gear mount drilled. I will not have the same problem drilling again, but Mr. Murphy is always watching. The patch is visible, but only from underneath the airplane, and once I polish the bottom it will look very unobtrusive.
