Larry Winger's 601XL Project
' style=
Date:  1-16-2008
Number of Hours:  2.00
Manual Reference:
Brief Description:  Finished polishing left flap bottom

As predicted, I was able to cut my time considerably tonight. I finished in two hours flat. The bottom turned out even better than the top because I wasn't fighting to remove self-imposed scratches from my prep phase. All I did was use 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper with water in line with the grain to speed up the compounding process. Worked like a charm. Thanks to Bill Clapp for that tip. Below I've shown a picture of two resources that were instrumental in pointing me toward homebuilding. The first is the book from 1975 by Don Dwiggins called "Build Your Own Sport Plane." I remember pouring over it in my early twenties, wondering if I'd ever be able to do such a thing. The other key resource was the DVD set from HomebuiltHelp called "Scratch Building Basics for Metal Aircraft." It gave me the confidence that I could tackle this challenge, and I can't imagine trying to scratch build the 601XL without it.
