Worked of the upper firewall former assembly today. While the former was already made in the kit, it needed the addition of a fuel spout box. The plastic fuel tank spout will be housed in this stanless steel box, protecting it from the engine.
The pieces that make up the box came as flat laser cut sheet metal. It was pretty easy to bend, but did take me a little while.
Stainless steel is a lot more difficult to drill than aluminum. The drilling took quite a while. Using cobalt drill bits, I had to use a LOT of pressure, and run my drill as slow RPMs. Drilling at full speed will just heat up and dull the drill bit, and harden the steel. If normal aluminum drilling pressure is used, it will take a long time to drill through, if the bit even gets a bite.
The box is all pilot drilled, but the former is getting an aluminum strap added to the top.
