Brief Description:  Left Wing Main Skins - Part 1

I started by cleaning and priming the interior of the left lower inboard wing skin (photo1). I then removed the vinyl from the exterior of the outboard skin and deburred the rivet holes on the exterior side of both bottom skins.

In rereading the instructions, I see that it is not necessary to scarf the whole width of overlapping sections of the wing skins, just the forward corners, so I finished that up. I'm very happy with the results (photo 2), and hope the top skins come out this well.

The exterior of the inboard skin does still have to scuffed for priming the full width of the overlap, as it is a faying surface. To prevent scuffing the visible portion of the skin, I temporarily reinstalled the skins on the skeleton, and laid down masking tape on the inboard skin with the edge precisely at the inboard end of the outboard skin. The masking tape stood up to the scotchbrite, and provided a masking line for priming. Worked great.

I couldn't find where the instructions call for match drilling and dimpling the access covers and their respective joggles on the skins, but I thought it would be easiest to do it now so I could dimple every thing at once off the wing. Checking the fit on the wing, the undersized holes in the access covers don't exactly line up with the larger holes in the skin, but they are close. To ensure perfect alignment, I clecoed the covers through the spar attach holes and then taped the covers securely to the skins (photo 3). I then removed the skins, clamped the covers securely to the skins, and match drilled through the interior side, so the full size #19 holes in covers and skins match precisely. I went ahead and reamed the rivet holes for the nutplates in the skin to final size and deburred them so they'll be ready to dimple with the rest of the skin.
