Brief Description:  Seat Backs

Yesterday, I only THOUGHT I had finished pilot drilling the seat backs. I still had to drill the bottom hinge and stiffener angle. I hadn't done that because I hadn't notched the bottom ends of the upright angles to clear the hinges.

I used a vixen file to cut the notches, and used a scrap angle to guide the file (photo 1). My vixen file has smooth edges, so it didn't dig into the guide angle. After having to clean up first notch on the scotchbrite wheel due to being a little deeper at the corner than at the end, I started marking the area to be filed with a sharpie to make sure I was cutting flat and even. It took 3-5 strokes to file the sharpied area down to clean metal, then I re-marked. After about 150-160 strokes, and a little cleanup on the scotchbrite wheel, I was down to the required 0.040". Tedious work, but I'm pleased with the end result (photo 2).

After the 4 uprights were notched, it only took a few minutes to pilot drill the rivet holes across the bottoms of the seat backs.
