Brief Description:  2. Aft Deck

I have less than 2 weeks before one of Tony Partain's drivers shows up to ship my project to Michigan, and I wanted to get the aft deck in place before he comes. Toward that end, I fabricated the F-710C spacer, and the F-711E spacer/elevator stop that fit between the top of their respective bulkheads and the bottom of the aft deck.

I then proceeded to check the fuselage for twist. I used an inclinometer app on my iPad mini to measure the angle (relative to gravity ;O) ) across the longerons at the F-704 bulkhead, and at the F-710 bulkhead with the aft deck in place but not clamped. The iPad inclinometer is somewhat sensitive to the vertical angle of the iPad, so I backed it up with a wide angle so the vertical angle was consistent between the forward and aft measurements. The F-704 bulkhead measured about 0.3 degrees, left side low, and the aft deck measured 0.6 degrees aft deck low. To remove the 0.3 degree twist, I clamped an angle across the horizontal stab attach bars for leverage with one hand, and tightened the clamps with the other while Karen held the iPad in position. Photos 1 and 2 show the forward and aft fuselage angles after tightening the clamps. They are parallel, so I'm calling it good.

After drilling one hole on each side at the middle of the aft deck, I noticed an issue with edge distance on the aft two holes on the right longeron. In photo 3 the caliper is set for 0.562, which is the 3/4" width of the longeron, less the 1/4" required edge distance, plus half the diameter of the hole. The slots for the HS attach bars are a tight fit on the bars, and won't allow the deck to be adjusted. I'll widen the slots a bit to square up the deck relative to the longerons. This will cause one of the drill holes to misalign slightly, so I'll replace that rivet with a 5/32 dia. one.

I also noticed that I need to replace the F-710B which I fabricated from 3/4" angle back when I built the bulkhead, while 1" angle is called out on the plans...
