Brief Description:  Session 2 - Riveted Elevator Stiffeners.

I thought this was going to be a quick session of just back riveting the stiffeners in place. Not so fast! I noticed that I had not dimpled either of the skins, or prepared the E-615PP trim access reinforcement plate for installation. Dimpling wasn't a big deal, but I did have to completely clean off one bench and set up the DRDT-2 and its tables.

I dimpled the #6 screw holes and installed the nutplates on the E-615PP trim access reinforcement plate. I used NAS1097AD3 reduced head rivets to attach the nutplates, which allowed countersinking the reinforcement plate without knife-edging the holes, and I didn't have to dimple the nutplates. As in the other components, I used standard dies to dimple the skin and will switch to tank dies to dimple the plate. Thankfully, I noticed that I hadn't deburred the trim access opening in the skin before riveting on the reinforcement plate.

Riveting went fairly well other than not holding the skin down to the backriveting plate well enough when opened wide enough to set the aft most rivets in the stiffeners. This was especially problematic on the second side, as the stiffeners already installed on the other side interfered somewhat with the rivet gun. I did have drill out and replace a couple of these, but that went well.

The elevator skins are pretty much ready for closing up the trailing edge bend, other than removing the vinyl back to the spar rivet lines.
