Brief Description:  Deburring Horizontal Stabilizer Parts

Didn't get as much done as I has suspected today. Last night when closing the garage door, the opener started raining nylon gear teeth. This morning I got it down and disassembled, and identified and ordered the required gear. Note to self: wind the door spring another turn or two to take the load off the gear.

Another hindrance to progress on the RV-7 was unseasonably warm, dry, and calm weather. The 170 hadn't been out in 3 weeks, so Karen and I took her out for a 1.3 hour jaunt amongst the local mountains ( the Tehachapis and the southern end of the Sierra Nevadas). It was such a smooth ride that I spent a full hour with my hands in my lap, suggesting headings to the airplane with my toes and making minute pitch trim adjustments by leaning forward and back in the seat. Definitely a flight to remember!

Oh yeah, this is supposed to be about building an RV-7... While at the hangar this morning to retrieve my ladder to work on the garage door, I found my favorite hole deburring tool, so I got started with that. I deburred ALL holes in ALL parts of the horizontal stabilizer, including spar channels, reinforcements, hinge brackets, ribs, and skins. I kind of dreaded the skins, but knocked them out in about 30 minutes each. I also final drilled the replacement HS-412 hinge bracket that I inadvertently drilled oversize on the second day of the project.

I also deburred the edges of the rear spar channels. All other parts except the skins had been edge-finished previously. I still have the skins to go to be completely done with deburring on the HS.

The photos show a couple of problems discovered during deburring. Photo 1 shows a figure-eight hole on the lower inboard corner of the left HS skin and rear spar. I have no idea how this happened; I didn't even discover it until dissassembling for deburring. I suspect the fix will be to add a rivet to the spaces on either side of the bad hole. I'll contact Van's for confirmation.

EDIT 1/3/12: Scott at Van's said the intermediate holes are fine.
