Brief Description:  Drilled the Vertical Stabilizer

Clecoed and drilled spar doubler and hinge brackets to rear spar. VS-808 spar doubler was quite bowed (by the punching operation, I assume), but seemed to lay down nicely when clecoed to the VS-803 rear spar.

Edge finished and straightened (by fluting) all VS ribs.

Assembled ribs and spars. Discovered that the forward flanges of the VS-707 center rib and VS-704 main root rib angles needed to be adjusted. With the flange radius in contact with the VS-702 spar web, and the holes in the tabs on the ribs matching correctly with holes in the spar flange, the rib flange did not rest flat on the spar web. I used a vice-grip flanging tool to adjust the flanges until they rested flat to the spar web. See photos below.

Final drilled spar doubler and hinge brackets to rear spar.

Installed and final drilled VS-801 skin to VS skeleton.

Used a taut nylon thread to check hinge bracket hole alignment. With the thread centered in the tip and root brackets, the thread missed the center of the center bracket holes by about 1/16", or about 2/3 of the radius of the holes. Either the center brackets need to be shimmed, or there is still a slight bow in the lower portion of the rear spar. Later, I will remove the hinge brackets and check the straightness of the rear spar.
