Brief Description:  Vertical Stabilizer Attach

Remounted the VS and marked the bottom three hole locations on the F-712 bulkhead. While the VS was still mounted I drilled the bolt holes that attach the F-712D to the longerons, then installed and snugged those bolts. After dismounting the VS (leaving the F-712D bolted to the fuselage), i measured down the inside to the tail spring mount, then down the outside to the hole locations, I determined that they are right where the drawing calls for them to be.

With the VS dismounted, I finished drilling the F-781 attach plate to the forward VS spar and, noting a slight interference of the VS spar at the bend in the plate, I trimmed about another 1/16” off the VS front spar, then deburred and primed the spar end. I still had plenty of edge distance for the bottom row of holes. I then deburred all the holes and edges of the attach plate, then scuffed, cleaned, and primed it.

I then match drilled the rivet holes that attach the F-712D to the aft deck, then removed it to scuff, clean, and prime it.

I then riveted the F-781 attach plate to the VS front spar, then remounted the VS to the fuselage using all four bolts to secure the F-712D to the VS and fuselage. I tried installing a washer between the left side of the F-612D and VS spar, but it made the whole left side of the VS spar stand proud of the bulkhead so I removed it.

I then proceeded to drill the bottom three bolt holes to final size, starting with the top left hole. Even though the hole is right where the plans call it out, the washer on the inside interferes with the flange of the tail spring mount. For now, I ground a flat on a couple of washers and used a longer bolt. For the final installation I’m considering a short length of spacer stock radiused to fit the tail spring mount. The upper right hole location seems to not have the same issue, but it’s close. If I had it to do over, I’d use the standard 1/2” edge distance for the AN4 bolt size instead of the 3/8” called out on the drawing.
