Brief Description:  Brake Pedals

Re-jigged rudder pedals in preparation for drilling the holes in the brake pedal arms for the lower ends of the master cylinders. I started by setting the master cylinder lengths at mid range. On the pilot side I drilled the left pedal arm at the center of the bottom radius and temporarily installed the master cylinder to fix the position of that pedal. I then jigged the right brake pedal to be parallel to the left pedal (photo 1), then clamped it in position relative to its rudder pedal. I then removed the left master cylinder, attached the right master cylinder only at the rudder pedal end and used a 3/16” center locating punch to scribe an arc on the right brake pedal arm. I then scribed a straight line down the center of the arms, and located the hole at the intersection of the scribe marks.

For drilling the 3/16” bolt holes in the pedal arms I used the same sequence of drills and a reamer as I did for drilling the pivot holes.

After temporarily installing the pilot side master cylinders, I put the rudder/brake pedal assembly in the fuselage and tried them on for size (photo 2). The middle location seemed to work the best, but it’s hard to tell without the rudder cables in place, and without a seat cushion to locate myself properly.

After removing the assembly from the fuselage, I repeated the brake arm hole locating and drilling process on the copilot side. I managed to find the brake pedal hardware bag and planned to permanently install the master cylinders, but the Grove cylinders will require AN3-10 bolts at the upper attach point rather than the supplied AN3-7’s due to the clevis on that end being larger than that on the Matco cylinders.

Finally, just to get the assembly out of the way, I dropped them back in the fuselage, using the center set of bearing attach holes (photo 3).
