Brief Description: Seat Backs
Today I drilled the rivet holes in all four upright angle supports for the seat backs. When I made the drilling template (the blue strip from the wing trim bundle, photo 1) I missed the edge distance by about 1/8", but the spacing between holes was spot on, so I drew a rivet line on one of the angles and only used the template to mark spacing on one of the upright angles. After finishing the holes on the drill press, I then clamped that angle to the two for the opposite side in turn, then one of those to mark the last one. In all cases I just drilled deep enough into the angle with my palm drill to mark the holes, then finished them on the drill press. I'm drilling everything #40 until I have the whole assembly clecoed together, when I'll open it all up to #30.
After drilling and deburring all four upright angles, I used them to match drill the skin. Not having ANY prepunched holes to go by is reminiscent of my RV-4/Harmon Rocket build. In photo 2, you can see the scrap angles clamped in place to ensure perfect lateral and vertical positioning for drilling. I only had time to complete drilling upright angles to one seat back (photo 3).
