Brief Description:  Baggage Compartment

During the last work session two days ago I drilled out the two inboard rivets attaching the F-656 gussets to the web of the F-706 bulkhead with the idea of dimpling the gusset and bulkhead together and install flush rivets to enable a good fit for the lower baggage bulkhead. However, the flange on the diagonal edge of the gusset precluded getting the female dimple die in place, so I had to completely drill the gussets out, bend the lateral flange out so the dimple die would clear the diagonal flange, re-bend the flange, then re-rivet the gussets, using flush rivets to attach to the F-706 (photo 1). A couple of hours of work and I was where I should have been two days ago: ready to drill the lower baggage bulkhead in place.

With the forward upper skin and the baggage floors in place, the position of the F-729C (the short lateral angle) is finally rigid enough relative to the F-729B (the long longitudinal angle) to match drill the one rivet holding them together (photo 2). I thought I was going to have to replace the short angle due to edge distance of the hole on the long angle, but there is a hair more than the 1/4" required. Drilling the hole and squeezing the rivet was fairly straightforward.

After match drilling the lower bulkhead into fuselage structure, I trimmed the 8-1/2" radius on the upper corners of the upper baggage bulkhead (photo 3). I didn’t have a compass, so I printed out an arc of the proper radius, taped it to some poster board, then cut it out with scissors. After marking the tangent points on the edges of the bulkhead I used the template on the back of the bulkhead (to avoid the corrugations) to mark the cut line. I cut just outside the line with hand shears then used the belt sander to finish to the line, and did the final edge deburring on the scotchbrite wheel.

I got all holes in the upper bulkhead laid out except the lower outboard corners, which will line up with the outboard vertical line of screw holes in the lower bulkhead.
