Brief Description:  Baggage Compartment

Today I moved on to the baggage compartment. The first thing I noticed when I went to fit the F-750 aft side covers was that I had failed to enlarge the rudder cable hole in both F-724 vertical bulkheads in the middle of the baggage sidewall. My unibit with the 5/8" lobe requires a 3/8" drill chuck, and I couldn't fit one of those against the skin. I used my 1/2" unibit in my air drill, then managed use the larger bit by hand, turning it with a 9mm open end wrench. Slow going, but I got it done.

I got both aft side covers drilled in place, then went to fit and drill the floor. At one time I had entertained the thought of making the floors removable, but in helping with an RV-12 project I've learned that it’s almost as easy to remove an LP4 rivet as it is to remove a screw, so I decided not to go through the effort of installing all the nutplates. I had already installed the nutplates for the center cover screws on the center baggage ribs, and I think I'll just leave them as is.

In drilling the aft flange of the floor to the F-706 bulkhead, I noticed that there was one rivet on each side at the intersection of the vertical and lower bulkhead members that should have been left out, to be common to the baggage floor flange. I'll drill those out when I'm done drilling all the baggage compartment floors and side covers to the structure.
