Brief Description:  Firewall and Brake Pedals

I finished deburring the rivet holes in the firewall angles and flanges, then clecoed the firewall in for what I hope is the last time.

I then riveted the attach angles on both ends of both forward skin stiffeners. The original skin stiffeners had a double offset bent into the aft ends for attachment to the F-704 bulkhead, but they didn't fit well, and one of the bends ended up in a rivet hole. I had earlier fabricated new stiffeners, and fabricated angle clips and spacers for the aft ends (photo 1). I then clecoed the stiffeners in place in the fuselage, riveting the forward attach angle to the vertical firewall stiffeners, as these rivets are only accessible with the side skins peeled back (photo 2).

After clecoing the side skins to the forward firewall structure, I checked the fuselage for twist. There is a difference of 0.3 degrees between the center of the F-705 upper cross member and the F-710 upper stiffener angle. Hopefully this will work itself out after installing the forward bottom skin. If not, there is supposed to be enough give in the fuselage to correct this before installing the aft deck.

I was going to go ahead and cleco the forward bottom skin in place, but discovered that I had not yet deburred, primed, or dimpled this skin. I went ahead and devinyled the interior rivet lines, and deburred the edges and the interior side of the holes. It was getting dark so I left the scuffing, cleaning, and priming for later.

I had some more time available, so I decided to assemble the brake pedals. I tried shooting and bucking the rivets on one pedal, but the factory heads ended up a bit proud, so I switched to squeezing. After assembly was completed, I was wondering how the brake pedals attach to the rudder pedals, and noticed that I had riveted the hole through the bottom of the side plates and angles that should have been enlarged for pivot bolts. It should be a fairly easy fix to drill out the one rivet in each pedal and enlarge for a pivot bolt.
