I needed something to get my mind off of having my 170 heavily damaged (while parked) by a runaway Cherokee in St. Louis, MO on July 19, so I thought what better way than to jump back in on the RV-7 project.
I had started countersinking the right longeron the last time I worked on the project, but I had noticed that the pilot on the countersink was scored. I discovered today what had caused that: I had drilled the skins to the longerons using a #41 bit. The resulting holes in the longeron were too small to accept the pilot on the countersink, and it just wore its way into the holes. I ordered and received a couple of new countersinking bits just before I went on vacation.
I started today by drilling all the #41 holes out to #40, and just to be on the safe side, I deburred both sides of the holes. After stabilizing the longeron on the bench (photo 1), I countersunk the rest of the side skin holes in the right longeron (photos 2 & 3), setting the countersink per the chart I worked out earlier (see Tools section, July 6, 2014).
I did not countersink the holes for the forward deck on the top leg of the longeron, as I'm not yet 100% sure how all of that fits together. The side skins fit flush with the top of the longerons, so the deck rivet holes can be countersunk after the side skins are installed. The right longeron is now ready for scuffing, cleaning, and priming.
