Brief Description: Forward Fuselage

I’m finally getting back to the RV after concentrating on an annual inspection on the 170 this week.
I started by match drilling the upper engine mount brackets through the F-770 side skins and longerons. It took a couple of applications of machine oil on the drill bit for each hole to ease the drilling through the steel brackets.
I then match drilled the bottom of the firewall through both rows of forward holes in the bottom skin. I had thought they were to be for 1/8" rivets, and I drilled the outboard ones in the aft row to #30 when originally fitting the firewall. Today when I got ready to drill I noticed the prepunched holes are for 3/32" rivets, and verified that on drawing 28. I don't think the two outboard aft holes being #30 is a problem; I just have to remember that fact when countersinking and dimpling the firewall and bottom skin before final assembly.
I then spent quite a bit of time familiarizing myself with how the F-713 auxiliary longerons, F-902 forward bulkheads, F-684 gussets, F-603 lower engine mount, and F-7101 gear attach webs all fit together. I found that if I drill the aux longeron in the center of the outside of the leg (3/8" edge distance), then the F-7101 gear attach web will have to be trimmed to fit. Using 5/16" edge distance on the aux longeron just allows the F-7101 to fit without trimming.
Before drilling the aux longeron, I trimmed the angle on the forward end to fit against the F-704 bulkhead (photos 1 & 2), and put in the slight twist required. I then lined it up with the F-7101 in place (photo 3), and drilled the aft hole. I then set the first hole aft of the engine mount bracket to the same edge distance and drilled all the holes between the two. I think I want to assure myself of the fit of the F-684 gussets before drilling through the engine mount brackets.

The forward angle on the left aux longeron fits well agianst the F-704 bulkhead.

The bottom of the originally drawn center line goes through the center of the holes.
