Brief Description:  Aft Fuselage

The clamping rig I had holding the tail spring mount to the F-711 was a bit slipshod and imprecise. I found another builder's log that showed using the vice grip type clamps, so that's what I did. To get the mount in the proper location on the bulkhead, I marked the center of the corner radii on the forward face of forward flange on the mount. I then marked a transverse line on the bulkhead 3/8" above the mount holes. The line was off a little, so I adjusted the mount until I could see the marked hole centers through the holes in the bulkhead. Using the clinometer app on my Ipad mini, I verified that the edges of the bulkhead were parallel with the tailwheel swivel bushing (+/- 0.1 degrees), then drilled the mount to the bulkhead stepping up using 1/8", 3/16", 15/64", and finally a 0.249 reamer. The bolts are a good slip fit.

Before finalizing the cutout opening in the aft skin, I wanted to get the aft fuselage put together so I could set the proper relative positions of the F-711 and F-712 bulkheads. I started by assembling the F-708, F-708, and F-706 bulkheads to the bottom and side skins (photo 2). I then cut the six J-channel stiffeners to length as called out on drawing 18, then trimmed the aft ends of two of them (the F=786B-R & L per the detail, also on dwg 18. After inserting those two stiffeners in the assembly I noticed that the drawing is incorrect. As trimmed per the drawing, the trimmed ends fit better at the forward end. I'm going to wait until I'm not quite a tired to trim the rest of the ends.
