Brief Description:  Session 2 - Dimpled Elevator Skeletons

I had planned on getting the right elevator essentially done today, but the weather was extremely nice for this time of year, and the 170 was way overdue for an oil change, so after I finished the rudder, I took a friend for a few laps of the airport and changed the Cessna's oil. All that, plus date night only left a short time to work on the RV-7.

In the spirit of building the elevators together I dimpled both skeletons. Most of the holes I dimpled with my tank dies that I'm having good success with on all substructures so far. As usual, these didn't fit the last few holes in the tapered tip ribs, and the right root rib, nor most of the trim spar as well.

After some fiddling around with the vice grip and pop-rivet dimplers, I came up with the idea of using the thin female pop rivet die with the male tank die. The easiest way to make that work turned out to be to line up the female pop rivet die on the foot of my no-hole yoke and tape it into place. I installed the yoke in my pneumatic squeezer, which I mounted in my bench vise, Only the aft most hole in the elevator root and tip ribs required slight spreading of the flanges. My 3/32" dimpled coupon lays in the dimples very nicely.
