Brief Description:  Prepping and Priming Empennage Parts

Marathon prep/prime session today. Completed HS skins, all parts of the VS including spars, doubler, ribs and skin, both rudder skins and rudder spar. The HS and VS are now ready for dimpling then final riveting. I still need to prep/prime rudder stiffeners, ribs, and misc. parts. I have not yet started on prep/prime of elevator parts.

The outside temperature dropped about 30 degrees from yesterday, so priming outside was out of the question. I set up in the garage and used the 1500W heater Karen got me for Christmas to warm the parts for priming. I'm keeping the Duplicolor self-etching primer in the house until time for sprayng.

After priming, I moved all parts into the (warm) spare bedroom for complete curing. The primer on the HS skeleton parts I primed yesterday is significantly harder than it was right after it dried; I can no longer leave a mark with my fingernail.

The rattle can primer does not seem to be a cheaper way to accomplish priming (I've used just a bit over 3 cans so far), but it's worth it to me not to have to mix before spraying and clean up equipment afterwards.
