Brief Description:  Cylinder plenum re-shaping

The last couple days didn't allow me much time in the shop due to a sick kiddo, but now that he's improving, I was able to sneak away for 3 hours. The first thing I did was to extend the dipstick. The stock dipstick length is just short enough to be annoying. Trying to reach down inside the cowling to check the oil when the engine is hot really sucked. UL Power sent me an extended dipstick several years ago when I told them I'd be using custom plenums. It's been sitting in a bin ever since. Well, today I went ahead and cut tube extension to give me another 2.25" in length that solves the hot engine access issue and will also make it much easier to fill the oil as well. Now I just need to trim the dipstick and engrave it to match the correct oil levels. Too easy right?
The next job in line was to modify the cylinder plenums. Due to the wider engine, the inlet side was off by 1.5" on both plenums. To fix this, I cut off the leading edge of the plenum, placed it inside the silicone coupler in it's original position then attached it to the boxes using superglue and sticks as framework. I then wrapped the framework in duct tape, stood them up on end and filled the inside with X-30 Foam. After cure I pulled off the duct tape and began contouring the foam. I was able to get one of them pretty much done before calling it a night. Tomorrow I should have both of them with a couple plies of BID on the exterior. After that cures I will clear out the foam and layup one more ply on the inside. A little micro and paint and these babies will be ready to cool! My goal will be to have these finished by end of week and then start on the cowling mods. Not sure I'm looking forward to those....:)
