Brief Description:  Re-contouring the lower cowling

In my previous post, I described my dismay concerning the Paint bubbling up where the cowl got really hot, and I found today that it was the uncured primer under the paint that blistered. :) I knew the primer wasn't cured a good 3 days but I wanted to run her up so I went ahead with the paint anyways. This also shows where I will need to bond some heat reflective shielding to the lower cowling. This is a common problem for canards so I'm not too worried that my primer and paint system is going to be threatened. However, there are a couple areas that have no clearance at the pipes due to engine sag on the rubbers over time. This meant, I needed to re-shape these areas.
Instead of just adding a "bump" to clear the area, I went all out and pour foamed a large area to blend the new contour without excessive filler. Strangely, After contouring down the foam, now both sides of the cowling match even better in shape. Win! After prepping the area, I laid up 1 ply Carbon and 4 plies BID. Not using Rutan BID, I opted for a thicker layup. I then went straight to wet micro over the entire area as a solid base to sand on before final micro, primer and paint. Hope to have her back in service by early next week.
