I really have no idea if this will work or not. All I know is that the oil temps are WAY too high and it's because the oil cooler has no air being fed into it. The location of the cooler works really well for guys running updraft on their cylinders but I'm all Downdraft at this point.
Being the only guy on earth that has this engine installed on an ez, I have to figure it out myself and it's been a long road so far, but not a bad one. My first idea here is to install a 2" NACA duct to the lower cowling and let the air spill over the backside of the cooler. It's not enclosed and I'm sure a LOT of air will go around the cooler, but I'm only looking for improvement right now. I've got till March to fly this thing 40 hours before heading off to Texas and I'm not looking for the most efficient fix at all. That is something that will happen next year. Right now I need sub 250 degree temps at LEAST.
I'm sure that taxiing for a long time after landing with a Hot engine will never be ideal in the oil sector, however it needs to be managable at the least. Even if that means instaling an electric fan that will run during taxi. For now, I like the options I have with this nace duct and can make an entirely enclosed system off this if needed. Tomorrow I'll be fitting it to the airplane and I know my tolerances at the base of the sump are going to be REALLY close. Taxi tests tomorrow will give me a good idea if this is a path I want to continue or not. In fact, if temps are good enough, then the next time the sun shines.....316NM WILL BE AIRBORNE! :D
