Let me make two things very clear. 1: Power Tools exist for a reason. USE them. 2: Anyone building a composite airplane that doesn't Use Cory Bird's Skim coating technique is asking for a long hard road to the end. Period. Now let me elaborate. Using a belt sander can ruin your day or make you day. Use no less than 120 grit and be careful. This saved me hours of hard work. I had the whole wing contoured in 20 minutes, then block sanded for 20 more to finish up the edges. Enough Said. After sanding I decided to go ahead with the skim coating process to coat and protect any exposed fiberglass and also to seal up the pin holes. I'm not sure that I will be able to get my FINAL contour with just the skim coat so I'll be lightly block sanding after 2 coats of epoxy in order to inspect the contour. It is REALLY nice having a hard shiny shell to work with when trying to identify high and low spots. If the low spots are too low after sanding then I will go back and add filler. AFter this step however, the final Cory Bird Skim coating will happen. In the meantime I'm waiting for new piano hinge to arrive so I can finish the internal rudder assembly and close off the winglets. My estimate is a finished wing ready for Primer within 2 weeks. :)
