Brief Description:  Not gonna risk it

Earlier in the day I was able to get an hour in before storms developed. I flew over a train that must have been pulling 100 cars. It was a sureal moment for me as I remembered my grandmother buying me my first train set as a child. The same grandmother that bought me model airplanes. In that very moment, the most important memories in my life were savored. God has been good to me.
The second flight restricted me to stay over the airport. The weather system was litterally less than 20 miles north of the airport moving west to easy and slowing closing in. I spent an hour in the pattern practicing Engine out procedures and what an amazing machine! Everyone always talks about how efficient these airplanes are but no one mentions how much control you have. I was amazed how good my glide was when she was clean, but dump JUST the gear and it's a lot of drag. I would add to that the speed brake and I can really come down in a hurry. Especially if I'm slipping it dirty. I would even dump the speed brake on final for like 4 seconds, then retract it to get my lift back. SO amazing, and I'd say it's a MUST for every canard owner to practice power off landings to really understand your bird. It will make me better in the pattern for sure! In fact, I have been coming in around 70-75kts on final, shallow and with some power (1400rpm), But now I know that at idle and dirty, I can come in steeper and bleed off speed a little better. This is definitely the better approach and would have helped a lot at RR. This won't be my last time having this much fun. It takes me back to my glider days where energy management truly is your survival.
