Brief Description:  And here comes the clear coat

So, I haven't practiced with the Matte clear at all but as idiot proof as the high gloss was, I thought I'd just go for it and this one is just as good. Before laying down the matte clear, I thoroughly prepped the elevators with a couple pin hole repairs and a final drop coat of paint to even out the metallics. I then quickly learned how little coverage I have in one $25 can of this clear coat business. I was only able to do 1 thick coat on 1 side of each elevator and on 1 side of each tip. This concerns me that I'll be spending a LOT more than I thought I would on clear coating the entire airplane. However, I do know Eastwood does a rat rod matte clear in quarts and gallons, so I may end up trying that to see if I can get similar results using my HVLP system. That would allow me to easily do touch up work down the road using the spray cans. For now, I ordered 5 more cans of clear that should get me through the canard. I may go for the Rat Rod clear on the cowl or something to practice
So after I laid down the first thick coat, I saw this terrible uneven cloudy layer of clear and thought, my gosh, I'll be sanding all this off. But after a while the fog cleared, the orange peel leveled out, and a PERFECT Matte surface was all that was left.
Here are my other thoughts. The High gloss clear adds incredible depth to this color that the matte takes away. However, high gloss clear will require a flawless contoured surface or it will expose every single mistake. The jury is still out on which clear to use, but this color has my heart. Tomorrow, we'll start finishing up the canard and hopefully get her all cleared up along with the rest of the elevators. This is a blast :)
