Brief Description:  Wing Tip #1 - Drilling wingtips

I decided on the piano hinge method of installing the wing tips because they are easier to take off / put on and I think they look better. Of course, the “easier to take off” does involve more work up front. So, I went looking for some guidance on how best to accomplish this method and found it in a familiar place – on my buddy Steve’s website. I read thru his instructions a few times, but I was still not comfortable with the process, so I reached out to Steve directly. He kindly forwarded the guidance that he used, which came from Mike Bullock’s Kitplanes article ( https://www.kitplanes.com/attaching-wingtips/ ) and another writeup from an un-named source. Thanks, so much Steve – that clarifies it!

I began by putting the right aileron pushrod back on and re-installing the aileron (ugh, should have left them on) and trial fitting the wingtip in place. The wingtip flange is purposefully too wide and needs to be trimmed to fit the wing. After many iterations of trial fit, removal, sand the flange and check the fit again – both wingtips were fitting nicely. I will need to adjust the right wingtip slightly in both length and in-trail with the aileron, so I decided to just leave the left aileron off for this step.

Next, I gorilla taped the wingtips in place and match drilled the holes from the wing to the wing tips. I started from the leading edge and moved rearward alternating between top and bottom as the instructions say. Up to this point is the same as standard, next I will be venturing into the modification steps.
