Brief Description:  Cowling #1 - Oil door

Bob shared a great idea from his fiberglass mentor, Rick. Rick suggested making a carbon fiber layup of the oil door, using the yet uncut top cowl as a mold to replace the fiberglass door provided by Vans. I thought this was a great idea and copied it immediately!

Tonight, using packing tape, I laid it over the area where I would place the carbon fiber. As many folks know, packing tape is a fantastic mold release agent. I got the whole area covered with tape and then mixed up the epoxy resin and, using three layers of carbon fiber, made a layup with the carbon fiber. I used an old plastic hotel key card to work the resin into the fiber and then covered the carbon fiber with peel ply.

Thanks, Bob, and Rick!
