Brief Description:  ELT shielded ground

Tonight I tackled the shielding ground at the ELT. Since I gave AFS 24" length for the ELT wire, I was short in having enough wire to go back to the ELT, which is behind the aft baggage compartment. I spoke to Tim @ AFS, and he recommended running the ground/shielding up from the ELT to meet up with the wire from the harness, which comes out of the GTN-650xi. He said to ground it at the ELT mount as the 24" of panel wire was already grounded, and that way, there would only be a short splice of wire that was not shielded and shouldn't cause any problems.

So, I pulled the ELT harness out from Sunday's work and cut the insulation away to expose the shielding. I added a local ground wire to the ELT sheld as recommended using a solder sleeve and a spare wire. I put the D-sub back together, re-ran the wires up and out of the right gear tower, and then installed the buzzer on the ELT mount. This buzzer installation was the most time-consuming part as there was hardly room behind the ELT mount to get my finger, the star washer, and the nut. In the end, the double-sided tape helped in the process, and I finally conquered the task.

As a note, I got out the APU and tested the buzzer - and man, that buzzer is loud!
