Brief Description:  Wing Tip #24 - Hinge pin anchors

I found a clear cutting board at a discount store and thought it might be perfect for the hinge pin anchor. It wasn’t my idea to use a cutting board, it was in the original mod. The material is plastic in nature and semi-transparent, which is good.

Once I got the measurements and the line that the pin would follow, I started cutting the material with the band saw to fabricate the first anchor. It came out pretty good and I held it in place and then drilled it to #30 and countersunk it for the large screw. Once countersunk, I drilled the hole the rest of the way to #19 and then installed it with the screw and marked the anchor for drilling. The important thing here is that you need to drill straight so that you don't drill out the side of the material – but not all the way to the end as you don’t want the pin to work itself loose out the back and interfere with the aileron. With the anchor marked, I drilled out the 3/32” holes where the pins would go and then re-installed the anchor, marked the pin and then cut the pin to size. I also smoothed the cut end on the scotch brite wheel.

The first one went pretty good, but I realized it would have been better to have my anchor nut plate farther aft, so that the hinge pin could have been longer, it would not have been so close to the aileron hinge and the longer pin would be easier to grab and remove…oh well, the pins have been cut…so, in that case, I will look at the bright side… These are light weight wing tip hinge pins – probably good for an additional .0002 mach of airspeed! 😊

There were a few more iterations on the right wingtip as I tried different (longer) anchors, with longer hinge pins...
