As I mentioned, it's better to run a tap thru the nutplates before installation so as to "loosen" them upa little bit. I mention this for the non-structural nutplates uses when you are just putting screws in to hold the consoles, floor ramps or mid-cabin covers.
I set up a little template with the pliers which made it easier to insert a nutplate - hold it tight with the pliers - then run the tap into / out of the nutplate. Some are fairly loose while others are very tight...the tight ones are the ones that will cause problems and can strip a screw - or break a screw that has happened recently on the mid cabin covers and also on one of the fuel tank screws/nutplates when building the wing. I still need to deal with that one and I think it is easier just to drill out the 2 rivets and replace the nutplate altogether.
Anyway, using the 8-32 tap, I probably tapped over 100 nutplates between the K1000-08's and the K1100-08's, as I purchases an exrta 40 K1100-08's thinking I would nutplate the floors. Upon further investigation, I have decided just to blind rivet the floors (per plans) and drill them out if needed. Others have done this and it takes less time, and less weight. I am on a mod break (no mods for now). I did mess up a few nutplates in the tapping process when they didn't tap straight - but oh well. I have plenty
