Brief Description:  Compass calibration, Safety wiring

The last couple of days worked on safety wiring and compass calibration. Using the double spiral safety wire technique from Brian Carpenter I wired the rudder turnbuckles and control cable turnbuckles. I finished three out of the four. The top elevator cable turnbuckle will be difficult because I cannot get both arms through the access hole to do it. Will have to devise a way. Yesterday and today we worked on the ADAHRS.The compass has been giving us problems because it has been all over the place. We suspected the unit itself but came to realize the ADAHRS was ok. After talking to Dynon, emailing David Beaulieu and talking we decided to pull the ADAHRS and move it. First we dropped it out of the aircraft and just below the access hole. Using a magnetic compass and turning the ADAHRS we found that it followed the turning and when pointed in cardinal directions, it matched. Thus, we knew the unit was good and we suspected that the mounting location was too close to the elevator cables. We moved the ADAHRS as far as we could get to the pilot side of the fuselage. We constructed a doubler plate out of 040 aluminum, drilled new mounting holes and clecoed the unit in place. Today, we moved the aircraft and pointed it in the cardinal directions and did the complass calibration test on the Skyview. For the first time the calibration passed and was saved. Monday we will taxi for the fifth time to the compass rose and execute the calibration one more time. We are confident that the problem was the control cables creating a field that influenced the compass heading. Thanks to David Bealieu for suggesting this as a solution.
