Didja miss me?

Was in Kansas for a week, plus the prep for the trip, family visitors, allergies, etc., and it's been awhile.

Yesterday got the wing flipped over on its back in order to finish up the underside. I had previously installed the strut fitting, and was glad it was pre-drilled because it's a bit critical that it be straight. Just for grins, I dug-out the AN7A-13 attach bolt to ensure the fitting hole lined up with the upper bracket on the strut. Oh Rats... The hole in the fitting was only 3/8", and the strut bracket was 7/16". That fitting really should be done in a drill press to ensure perpendicularity etc, so with my best effort I did it by hand. Fortunately I up-drilled in 1/64" increments, and the last drill before the 7/16", I thought I'd better check my work. I noticed the drill bit was a bit slanted in the hole. At this point, if the strut fitting is ruined, the only way to replace it would be to cut a hole in the bottom of the wing to get to the nuts holding it in. The hole would then be covered with a standard inspection cover. I talked with Roger at Zenith. He said I had .030" wiggle room for that bolt before the fitting had to be replaced. With a .4375 bolt, that meant I had up until .4675 befoe I was in trouble. I thought about drilling the last way with a drill guide which I made, but was unhappy with the results, so I hand-drilled it using the strut attachment bracket as a guide. Success! Didn't wallow-out the hole, and the fitting hole was an almost perfect .439.

Next, I finished measuring the crankshaft journals. All are within service limits. See next post for numbers.

Lastly, I re-cleco'd measured, and riveted the underside of the trailing edge.

The wing is as done as it can be before final fitment in the hangar. How I just have to hang it on the ceiling and start the left wing.
