Brief Description:  Paint Prep

The prior entry detailed the steps getting the fuselage onto my roll around paint stand along with using lacquer thinner to remove the mill mark stampings.

Today was a long day. I took 1.2 hours to use Dawn dish detergent and a red Scotchbrite pad to wash the exterior just to remove any surface contaniments such as oils, dust, etc. I could not believe how dirty the rinse water became! From this point on, any touching of the aluminum will require gloves.

Next, I repositioned the fuselage to place in the shade because the next two steps require the chemicals to remain wet until time to rinse off.

I used Alumiprep 33 (current branding is Bonderite C-IC-33) in small sections. You brush it on and keep it wet for 3-5 minutes. Interesting to see it buble up like soap, but it's really the acid interacting with the metal.

After the set time, the surface is thoroughly rinsed. While still wet, Alodine 1201 is applied (again, Bonderite 1201) to chemically change the surface to one providing better grip for the paint, much as a primer would do (no primer required now). This process continued until all 4 sides of the fuselage were cleaned and prepped.
